Staphylococcal Infections in Newborn Infants. II. Report of 19 Epidemics Caused by an Identical Strain of Staphylococcus pyogenes

Abstract
Bacteriophage typing has simplified epidemiologic studies in staphylococcal infections. There has been an increasing incidence of epidemic infections in hospital nurseries throughout the world in recent years. The authors report that most epidemics in U.S.A. and abroad have been due to penicillin-resistant S. pyogenes, phage type 42B/47C/44A/52/80/81. Control measures are discussed. Staphylococcal disease in infants and mastitis in nursing mothers should be reportable diseases to assure that hospital nurseries are promptly suspected as sources of infection.
