Abstract
Estimates of the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) derived from population-based registries show an increase in incidence worldwide during the past 2 decades,1-7 albeit less so in the United States.8,9 It has been assumed that type 1 DM identified in these registries is mostly autoimmune-mediated, although this has not been confirmed with measured diabetes autoantibodies.
