Abstract
In a study of laterality of lying down made with 35 heifers, neither side was favored on the basis of observations made in the morning. During the mid-afternoon period they favored the left side in 56% of the recorded observations, a statistically significant change. Since the heifers received a once daily feeding in mid-morning it was thought this difference in favor of lying on the left side was due to the eating of a large amount of forage. This assumption was supported by an increase in the variance, as well as in the mean, of the proportion of times a heifer was observed lying on her left side during the afternoon as contrasted with the morning. The double muscle heifers did not differ from the normal in favoring the left side, however, they were observed lying down more frequently. Copyright © 1972. American Society of Animal Science .
