THIOURACIL IN THE TREATMENT OF THYROTOXICOSIS

Abstract
Thiouracil treatment of 77 cases of primary toxic goiter, 30 cases of re-current toxic goiter, and 47 cases of thyroidectomy following thiouracil therapy has led to several conclusions. Thiouracil as the sole therapeutic agent in primary thyrotoxicosis is not advocated because the incidence of permanent remissions is so small. Because of the incidence of toxic reactions with thiouracil, iodine alone is advocated as preparation for operation. Thiouracil therapy did hold promise in a group of cases with recurrence of symptoms after operation.
