Abstract
Fumigation of dried fruit with ethylene oxide and solid carbon dioxide may give rise to a cold layer of gaseous carbon dioxide at floor level in which the gas concentration of ethylene oxide is greatly reduced. Penetration of the fumigant into boxes of fruit near the floor may thus be reduced, causing ineffective fumigation. Gentle agitation of the air inside the chamber is shown to be an effective method of avoiding the layering. Keywords
