Abstract
During the past 25 years, increasing evidence has been accumulated that in the central nervous system dopamine (DA) does not represent solely a precursor in the biosynthesis of noradrenaline, but it can also be considered a neurotransmitter in its own right (for a review see Reference 1). Although a role as an autonomic neurotransmitter for DA has not yet been clearly demonstrated (see Chapters 1 and 8), it is commonly accepted that the effects of dopamine at the periphery resemble, but are different from, those of noradrenaline.
