Abstract
Radiative transfer in spectral lines under non-equilibrium conditions in an optically thick plasma is dealt with. A method has been developed to calculate the excited-state density by defining a position-dependent loss function A(r) which describes the net radiative loss, and which is determined by the spectral-line profile and the variation of n2(r) as a function of the coordinates. A(r) is compared with the loss function in certain approximations. As an application a three-level model is solved for a low-pressure Na-Ne discharge. Keywords
