Abstract
A practical method of controlling Salmonella infections in breeding colonies of mice, based on considerable experience, is presented. Single fecal pellet suspensions or rectal swab material from individual young adult mice are plated on brilliant green agar, and suspicious colonies are identified by agglutination and pathogenicity tests. A carrier incidence of less than 0.4% was obtained by performing such tests just prior to mating, and thereby eliminating carriers.
