Abstract
The paper describes a new instrument for the determination of traveller-ring friction which utilizes the flexibility, accuracy, and sensitivity obtainable with electronic techniques. The quantity actually measured is the frictional force generated by the movement of the traveller around the ring, and from this the coefficient of friction can be calculated. Provision is made for recording the frictional force so that its variation with time can be examined. The application of the instrument to the investigation of new materials for travellers and rings is discussed and some illustrative results are given. Keywords
