Abstract
Despite the antiquity of the international corporation ‘surprisingly little academic research has focused on this complex and fast-changing field until recently’ (Bartlett et al., 1990: 1). There is a particular shortage of empirical studies, partly because of the late interest shown in the operations of these corporations and partly their sheer complexity and geographical extension across space make access difficult. Most available studies suffer one or more of three shortcomings.
