The electrodynamic tether

Abstract
The electrodynamic tether project being developed by NASA will use a conducting tether attached to a spacecraft in low Earth orbit to interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. This project represents a novel application of Faraday’s and Lenz’s laws of classical electrodynamics. The dynamics of the tether also provide an elegant application of classical mechanics. To emphasize this point, the dynamics of the tether are considered and solved exactly in a reasonable model. The solution for the tether’s configurations has the rather interesting feature that it bifurcates for a certain range of the electrical current in the tether.
