Improving Bounds on Penguin Pollution in B -> pi pi

Abstract
In the presence of penguin contributions, the indirect CP asymmetry in B0(t) -> pi+ pi- measures sin(2\alpha + 2\theta), where 2\theta parametrizes the size of the penguin ``pollution.'' We present a new upper bound on |2\theta|, involving also the measurement of B+ -> pi+ pi0, along with an upper bound on or a measurement of BR(B0 -> pi0 pi0) + BR(B0bar -> pi0 pi0). The new bound is stronger than those previously discussed in the literature. Indeed, since the bound results from the requirement that the two isospin triangles close and have a common base, it is the most stringent bound possible on |2\theta|, without separate measurements of B0 -> pi0 pi0 and B0bar -> pi0 pi0.
