Unusual Localization of Mixed Tumours in the Parotid Region

Abstract
In a histological re-examination of 914 cases of parotid tumor, 641 proved to be mixed tumors (622 benign and 19 malignant). The majority had an infra-auricular localization in the superficial lobe, whereas a few lay relatively far forward on the cheek, in front of the anterior margin of the parotid gland. These tumors were regarded to arise from accessory salivary-gland tissue along the anterior course of Stensen''s duct. Occasional tumors grew in between the mandible and mastoid process towards the lateral pharyngeal wall, which bulged forwards. In a case described, diagnosed preoperatively as a malignant mixed tumor of the parotid gland, the localization raised the question of whether it can be denoted as a parotid tumor. It is nevertheless evident that it is a malignant mixed tumor arising from salivary gland tissue. It cannot be definitely decided whether the tumor arose from salivary gland tissue in the main part of the parotid gland, or its accessory part along Stensen''s duct, or from small salivary glands in the oral mucosa.
