Abstract
One experimental reminiscence group, using a conventional format to recall memories from different life stages and another using an experiential format that included focusing on feelings and thoughts were compared to each other and to control samples that did not formally meet in groups, but were tested in groups. All groups increased in satisfaction and self-concept. The experimental groups displayed more inclusive, less avoidant types of reminiscing, but experiential groups incorporated the greatest measure of feelings and thoughts in reconstruction of the past.
