Evaluation of Failures in the Treatment of Lingual Carcinoma

Abstract
This study presents an evaluation of treatment failures of the most virulent of all intraoral cancers, carcinoma of the tongue. Regardless of the type of therapy, survival rates remain poor. All cases of tongue cancer in the files of the Tumor Registry of the Cancer Clinic, The Ohio State University Health Center, were evaluated, with special attention to the reasons for failure and to possible methods for improving survival rates. Material Sixty-nine cases of tongue cancer were available for study 5 or more years after treatment and 119 cases that were 3 or more years after treatment. The cases were classified as to the extent of the primary lesion and the metastases, if any.
