Perturbed Gamma-Gamma Directional Correlation inCd114

Abstract
The directional correlation of the 722-556 kev gamma-gamma cascade in Cd114 following K-capture in In114 has been observed as a function of physical and chemical state of the source. Dry InCl3 and frozen solutions thereof are consistent in giving an attenuation factor 0.77±0.08 in the anisotropy. The lifetime of the intermediate state is found to be ≤2.3×1010 sec. Assuming that the perturbing interaction is electric and making a crude estimate of an upper limit in the electric field gradient at the nucleus, one obtains a quadrupole moment |Q|>~0.4×1024 cm2 for the intermediate state of the cascade.
