Abstract
The linearized Fokker–Planck equation for homogeneous and isotropic plasmas is solved by using the Raleigh–Ritz variational procedure. The problem is considerably simplified when only dominant terms in the ratio of the electron mass to the positive ion mass are taken into consideration. The results are compared with the solution of the Balescu–Guernsey–Lenard equation obtained by Rosenberg and Wu. The agreement of the solutions can be taken as a justification for the use of the Fokker–Planck equation for homogeneous plasmas. Keywords
