Inter-ring proton couplings in naphthalene

Abstract
The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of 1,3,5,7- and 1,3,6,8- tetradeutero-naphthalenes have been examined at 60 MHz with simultaneous 1H-{2H} spin decoupling. Analysis of the spectra has yielded the following values for the interring coupling constants in naphthalene : J1,5 = | 0.83|; J1,6 = -0.16; J1,7 = + 0.21 and J2,6 = | 0.28| Hz. The signs of J1,6 and J1,7 have been determined relative to J1,3.
