Abstract
Free beam and contact laser prostatectomy have enjoyed tremendous popularity over the past few years. Nonside-firing contact vaporization techniques have limited usefulness, best employed in resectable gland sizes of 20–30 g. Side-firing lasers are being used for primary coagulation necrosis techniques, combined vaporization, and coagulation necrosis ablation of the prostate in glands of all sizes. Nearly all reports to date have described the Nd: YAG laser as the energy source. Most studies report results that are equivalent or nearly equivalent to the standard transurethral resection of the prostate. Reported adverse effects are significantly less in the laser-treated patients. Whether the laser technique will enjoy lasting popularity will be determined by the durability of the treatment results (which appear to be favorable), as well as the evolution of competing technology. Keywords
