Abstract
Atherogenesis of the vessels of the circle of Willis was studied in 107 diabetics using the coding system devised by Baker and associates. Diabetes is associated with an increase in the frequency and severity of cerebral atherosclerosis in all age groups. The duration of diabetes does not appear to be well correlated with the severity of atherosclerosis. There is no difference according to sex in the incidence or severity of cerebral atherosclerosis. A serum cholesterol of over 250 mg % is correlated with an increase in the severity of cerebral atherosclerosis. The increase is not sufficient to explain entirely the increase of atherosclerosis seen in diabetics as compared with nondiabetics. Hypertension does not appear to increase the incidence or severity of cerebral atherosclerosis in diabetics. Diabetics in whom acetonuria develops easily were found to have an increased severity of atherosclerosis. Keywords
