Abstract
In this comment on the work of S. Clough, (see ibid., vol.18, p.L1, 1985), the author derives explicit expressions for the asymmetric motion induced in a tunnelling particle following an impulse, which was suggested to exist by Clough. He comments on the erroneous quantum mechanics of Clough's treatment that stemmed from his consideration of angular variables and time dependence of his Hamiltonian. He points out that subsuming the lattice vibrations (in thermally assisted tunnelling) into a random time-dependent force is inconsistent with the principle of detailed balance.
