Abstract
A combining‐ability analysis of a five‐parent diallel cross in plant crop of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) seedlings showed that estimates of mean squares of general combining ability for stalk weight, stalk number, stalk diameter, stalk length, density, cane yield, Brix, and kg‐Brix were not significantly different from zero. Estimates of mean squares of specific combining ability were significant for all characters. Path‐coefficient and regression analyses of l0 crosses showed that stalk number, stalk diameter, stalk length, Brix, and density, i n that order, were important in determining kg‐Brix on a per‐plant basis. This information suggests that a small number of seedlings of each of many crosses among adapted clones should be examined to identify combinations with high specific combining ability. A large number of seedlings of these superior crosses could then be grown in subsequent years.
