New Zealand fish oils

Abstract
An examination of the fat from a New Zealand fresh water eel (A. aucklandii) by the ester fractionation method showed the relative proportions of component fatty acids to be similar to those found by Lovern (1932, Biochem. J. 26, 1978) in the case of fresh water fish inhabiting the Northern Hemisphere. Examination of the C18 unsaturated acids by oxidation with alkaline permanganate and bromination, respectively, showed the presence of oleic acid together with some stearidonic acid. No evidence for the presence of either linoleic or linolenic acid was found.
