Abstract
The eeg responses to high frequency (150 cps) electrical stimulation of the hippocampus and of the midbrain reticular formation were studied in 25 adult cats prepared under ether and then immobilized with succinylcholine. Limbic excitation produced afterdischarges last-ing 35-50 seconds. These were reduced by 1/2 or more by 20 mg/kg of meprobamate. Stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation pro-duced activation of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Activation was not affected by meprobamate in doses several times that which suppressed limbic seizures. This differential effect of meprobamate is contrasted with the non-selective depression of both seizures and activation by barbiturates. Keywords
