Inhibition of Acid-Induced Peptic Ulcer Pain by Local Anesthetics

Abstract
In human subjects (5) with active uncomplicated peptic ulcer direct infusion of [image]/10 HCl produced typical ulcer pain. Topical anesthetics infused directly into the region of the ulcer blocked pain response to HC1 in 3 cases and reduced the response in two. Anesthetic agents had no affect on gastric or duodenal motility. Findings support the hypothesis of Palmer that afferent nerve endings within an ulcer crater can be adequately stimulated by chemical means.
