A Contribution to the Study of North American Strigeids (Trematoda)

Abstract
A collection of avian parasites from Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin has been studied. 7 strigeid trematodes are new: Strigea macroconophora from Buteo jamaicensis borealis, Wise.; Cotylurus brevis from Nyroca affinis Mich.; C. medius and Diplostomum repandum from Sterna hirundo, Ohio; Neodiplostomum buteonis from Buteo jamaicensis borealis, Ohio; Uvulifer semicircumcisus and U. magnibursiger from Megaceryle alcyon, Mich. Each sp. is discussed and di differentiated from related spp. Strigea falconis is recorded for the first time from Buteo jamaicensis borealis, in Ohio and Wisce.; Apharyngostrigea cornu (Zeder) (= A. bilobata Olsen) is recorded from Ardea h. herodias, and Casmerodius albus egretta, Ohio. Differential characters are discussed. Apatemon gracilis is recorded from Mergus serrator in Ohio, and its morph. is discussed. Cotylurus aquavis (Guberlet) recorded from Gavia immer, Wis. is probably a var. of C. erraticus (Rud.) or is identical with it. A table comparing the measurements of C. cornutus and C. brevis is included. Diplostomum gavium is recorded from Gavia immer, in Wis., and a table of measurements is included. Mesoophorodiplostomum pricei is recorded from Larus argentatus, and a discussion and table of measurements are included. A specimen of unusual size of Posthodiplostomum minimum from Ardea h. herodias, in Ohio, is descr. In an addendum remarks concerning the morph. of Diplostomum micradenum are presented. In a note on the genus Uvulifer Yamaguti, the so-called "genital bulb" is concluded to be a kind of preputial fold, and not a genital bulb such as seen in Cotylurus. This exposition constitutes a new justification of the idea of a derivation of the genus Uvulifer Yamaguti, beginning with Posthodiplostomum Dubois.
