Abstract
A simple demonstration, applicable to any ploidy level, that response to selection measured after one generation of random mating is proportional to the gametic variance, is given. The reduction in the coefficients of variance components during subsequent random mating generations is related to the approach of the population structure to various types of equilibria. Keywords
