Abstract
A cell for the electrolytic oxidation of iodine to iodic acid is described. This oxidation was effected by means of a platinum anode in a solution containing hydrochloric acid as the iodine carrier. A similar cell was used to oxidize iodic acid to periodic acid, in the absence of chlorides, using a lead dioxide anode. Both acids may be obtained in crystalline form by evaporation of their respective anode solutions. A commercial grade of iodine may be used as a raw material since pure iodic acid (HIO3) and pure para‐periodic acid (H5IO6) may easily be secured from the crude product by recrystallization from concentrated nitric acid. Keywords
