Abstract
The possibility has been investigated of preparing a surface-active carbon material by thermooxidation treatment of Bulgarian anthracite with air. The oxidation is carried out at different temperatures (300-700°). The duration of treatment is varied from 20 min to 5 h. The flow rate of the air is kept constant at 8lh-1.A temperature of 450°C and oxidation period of 3 h were found to be optimum for the preparation of anthracite with good adsorption properties. The adsorption capacity of the thermooxidized anthracite for methylene blue and iodine is 33.3 mglg and 92.7 mg/g, respectively. Marked development of macroporosity at the external surface of the grains of the oxidized anthracite could be seen under the scanning electron microscope. Keywords
