Abstract
The label “Failure‐to‐Thrive” has been used widely with those infants failing to gain weight and develop as expected. Reasons for developmental failure may be organic or inorganic. Although useful in communication between professionals, the Failure‐to‐Thrive label often causes significant emotional stress in the involved family. The label has implied inadequate parenting, poor mother‐infant interaction, and even neglect. The purpose of this paper is to describe one family's two year ordeal when given the diagnosis of Failure‐to‐Thrive. Some recommendations are also made for a family systems approach when attempting to diagnose children who fail to develop normally and when no medical cause is readily identifiable. Keywords
