Therapeutic Aspects of Funeral Ritual

Abstract
The experience of significant funeral rituals for 32 adult bereaved individuals was examined in an intensive interview study. Intewiewees had lost either a spouse or a parent. Structured and open-ended questions were asked regarding the funeral experience. Thematic analysis of the narrative data revealed five prevalent themes with corresponding meta-themes. A review of these themes suggests the therapeutic use of a narrative approach to grieving individuals in the process of reconciliation of the loss.
