Abstract
We suggest that the conservation of muon number is associated with a local gauge principle and that small nonconservation effects develop from the spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry. Experimental consequences of the scheme, stemming from the spontaneous genesis of off-diagonal neutral currents, are discussed in detail. Keywords
