Abstract
An approximate potential curve for the 5Σ+g state of the nitrogen molecule is proposed. The curve is based on the parameters De=1100 cm—1, ωe=650 cm—1, and re=1.55 Å, which were derived from a consideration of recent afterglow measurements and from an examination of the predissociations in the a1Πg and B3Πg states. The main features of the potential are in keeping with the trend of the 5Σ+g curve as proposed in the most recent theoretical work (see the accompanying paper by R. S. Mulliken). Keywords
