Effect of Naloxone on Pituitary Hypersecretory Syndromes*

Abstract
Naloxone administration acutely lowered elevated plasma ACTH concentrations present in subjects with Nelson's syndrome or primary adrenal hypofunction (Addison's disease and congenital adrenal hyperplasia), but did not do so in control subjects or subjects with pituitary tumor hypersecretion of GH or PRL. In the subjects with ACTH hypersecretion, naloxone had no effect on either plasma GH or PRL concentrations. These observations raise the possibility of additional forms of pharmacological therapy in some cases of ACTH hypersecretion.
