Abstract
HOW do small communities react to the imminent loss of their doctor? How do they define their medical needs and attempt to meet them? Where do they turn for advice? Such questions have long plagued the medical profession, state health departments, medical schools and, not least, the people who live in small communities.The current "crisis in medicine" in the United States has had a long gestation period marked by increasing specialization, proliferation of medical technologies, greater reliance upon hospital facilities and an accelerating "drift" of physicians from rural to urban areas.
