Abstract
A system was designed to provide medical care to families in a rural community by means of a physician's assistant linked to an urban medical center. Medical services were defined in collaboration with the community. The assistant, a registered nurse and local resident, was trained to make observations, communicate, and act under physician supervision. The system has been operating for two years and has given care to over 500 families. Keywords
