Carcinoma of the Parathyroid Glands

Abstract
THE ENTITY of carcinoma of the parathyroid glands is well established in the medical literature in spite of its extreme rarity. This condition, particularly when associated with a tumor of endocrine function, is a fascinating and intriguing one from the physiological point of view. More important, it represents a condition which is fraught with hazards to the patient and one which is a challenge to the surgeon inasmuch as surgical therapy is the only method available to achieve a cure. Experience at this hospital has included 10 cases of functioning carcinomas in over 250 cases of hyperfunctioning tumors of the parathyroid glands. Although 4 of these cases have been presented by us, it is desirable at this time to review the entire experience with 6 additional cases.
