Abstract
The serum of normal individuals, as well as that of chronic schizophrenic patients, has the capacity to esterify free cholesterol when incubated at 37 C. This esterifying activity decreases with age in both groups. The observation that serum of older females shows a lower esterifying activity than that of males of the same age group, in contrast to the situation in younger age groups, may be related to the endocrine changes occurring after menopause. The rapid infusion of epinephrine or saline was followed by less demonstrable cholesterol esterifying activity in the serum. Changes in total serum cholesterol levels during epinephrine and saline infusions were found to occur within minutes of the 30-min infusion period. Keywords
