Surgical Repair of Retinal Detachments Caused by Macular Holes

Abstract
Retinal detachments due to macular holes are not common. When they occur, they present difficulties to the surgeon because of the technical problems encountered in approaching the posterior pole of the globe. A surgical technique has been developed which is based upon the specific pathogenesis of detachments due to macular holes and which has proved safe and effective. A new instrument is presented which permits unencumbered access to and treatment of sclera underlying the macular region.
