Head Space Gas Chromatographic Analysis of Paraldehyde in Toxicologic Specimens

Abstract
A new method for determination of paraldehyde involving acid catalyzed decomposition to acetaldehyde in a closed vessel followed by head space analysis is reported. Except for the acidic medium all conditions of analysis are the same as those used in our laboratory for routine head space analysis of the common alcohols and ketones. The method should be readily useable by any laboratory employing head space analysis of these substances. Results from a recent death involving ethanol and paraldehyde are reported.
