The cosmic microwave background in a globally inhomogeneous universe

Abstract
A globally inhomogeneous universe is considered in the framework of an approximation scheme for constructing inhomogeneous universes in general relativity. The back-reaction of Newtonian inhomogeneities gives inhomogeneous and anisotropic correction terms to the averaged expansion factor. Dipole and quadrupole moment of the cosmic background radiation in a one-dimensional example are calculated, and a cosmological interpretation of the dipole component is shown to be consistent with the observational upper limits.
