Abstract
The continued high rate of preventable maternal and fetal deaths has challenged the medical profession both here and abroad. It is to the credit of organized medicine that the facts are being squarely faced. Every phase of maternal care from the time of conception to the puerperal state has been subjected to investigation. Contraceptive technic, abortion, antepartum care, management of the delivery, the postpartum period, the nursery, all are being carefully analyzed by the best trained specialists in this field. No doubt, definite benefits will be derived from these studies. We have been particularly interested in the antepartum clinic since the inception of Morrisania City Hospital in 1929 and systematically collected and studied the clinic data in 1934. A brief description of the clinic is essential for a proper interpretation of our data.
