Abstract
A total of 2,890 records of pigs from 278 litters were used to estimate means for birth weight, weaning weight, pre- and postweaning average daily gain and days from weaning to 95 kg, in crossbred pigs. The crosses involved were 1/2 Duroc-1/2 Yorkshire (D1 Y1), 1/2 Hampshire-1/2 Yorkshire (H1 Y1), 3/4 Yorkshire-1/4 Duroc (Y3 D1) and 3/4 Yorkshire-1/4 Hampshire (Y3 H1). Significant estimates of crossbred pig superiority were found for postweaning average daily gain and for days from weaning to 95 kg in all crosses except the Y3 H1. None of the crosses exhibited significant superiority for birth weight and only the D1 Y1 cross had a significant, positive advantage for weaning weight and preweaning average daily gain. The backcross Y3 H1pigs showed no significant superiority for any trait when compared to parental means calculated from breed means weighted by breed composition. Y3 D1 pigs exceeded Y3 H1 pigs in all measures of performance. Copyright © 1979. American Society of Animal Science .
