Abstract
In a formal medical syllabus it is difficult to provide an opportunity for the discussion of broader cultural, philosophical and personal issues relevant to doctorship. In particular, it is a delicate task to create an environment in which the students take the intellectual initiative in a consideration of human issues. In an attempt to provide such an opportunity, I designed a short course that is structured around a consideration of extracts from classic literary works, an adventure made possible by the teaching example of Dr. Theodore Redpath, fellow and director of English Studies, Trinity College, Cambridge University, and the encouragement . . .Keywords
