Depletion and adhesiveness: A fundamental measure functional for the adhesive potential

  • 21 April 1998
Abstract
We present the first attempt to extend fundamental measure theory in order to include attractive interactions, by constructing the functional of the parallel adhesive hard cubes fluid as that of an infinitely asymmetric binary mixture of parallel hard cubes. The phase behaviour is analysed and the singularity of the adhesive potential reported in the literature is discussed on the functional obtained. The system is shown to always collapse into a close-packed solid, although there is a wide metastability region in which a fluid and an expanded solid can be observed. We also show how polydispersity regularises the functional and transforms the collapse into an isostructural solid-solid transition. We discuss the consequences of our analysis for very asymmetric hard particle mixtures.
