Abstract
The appearance and behaviour of the contrast effects known as streaks are described. It is shown that streaks arising from image superposition, interfaces and stacking faults can be identified. The more general type of streaking found in images from specimens with an elliptical cross section eludes explanation but the most likely causes (dislocations, slip bands, etc.) are considered. Keywords
