Abstract
Viola Roggencamp interviews an Indian woman who went for a sex-identification test to the Bhandari clinic run by a business-minded husband-wife team of gynecologists and who, when the test said ‘female,’ had an abortion. The desperation of this woman who is already the mother of three girls and could not bear the thought of a fourth one reflects the worldwide devaluation of women and points to the many painful contradictions inherent in the availability of reproductive technologies as long as we live in a world in which men oppress, exploit and hate women.
