Abstract
A new genus of marine red algae, Ahnfeltiopsis (Phyllophoraceae, Rhodophyceae), is proposed to accommodatethose species previously assigned to Ahnfeltia and Gymnogongrus that produce internal cystocarps and have a life history in which erect gametophytes alternate with a crustose tetrasporophyte. Carpospores are released through specialized pores (carpostomes) that penetrate the cortex overlying the cystocarp. Tetrasporangia, which are produced in intercalary catenate series, are cruciately divided. The type species is Ahnfeltiopsis linearis (C. Agardh) comb. nov. (Basionym: Sphaerococcus linearis C. Agardh). Thirteen other nomenclatural combinations are proposed. Ahnfeltiopsis okamurae is proposed as a new name for Ahnjeltia furcellata Okamura [not Ahnjeltiopsis furcellata (C. Agardh) comb. nov.).Keywords
