Abstract
A biological technic has been established for the assay of the virulence-enhancing factor of mucins and chemical fractions thereof. Unknown mucin samples are compared with a "standard" mucin prepn. A constant number of Bacterium typhosum (strain Ty2) is injd. intraperit. into batches of 20 mice in the presence of falling concns. of the test materials. Comparisons of death rates and concns. are made by probit analysis. The assay can detect 2-fold differences in virulence-enhancing activity with probability P = 0.95. The toxicity of mucin prepns. at high concns. is noted.
