Determinants of perceived choice and the relationship between perceived choice and perceived competence.

Abstract
Predicted that both perceived choice and perceived competence would be greater under conditions of a small relative difference in the attractiveness of 2 decision alternatives than under conditions of a large difference and greater under conditions of low certainty about the attractiveness of each alternative than under conditions of high certainty. Analyses of data from 56 male and 20 female university students support these predictions and indicate that perceived competence is positively correlated with perceived choice. The relationship between perceived choice and perceived competence is discussed in terms of why people desire to have freedom. It is suggested that in situations in which people feel free, their competence motivation can be best satisfied. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
